This is a dangerous assignment, and I accept it. I ate nine burgers in Staunton so you don't have to, and my arteries are filing a formal complaint.

We’re talking everything from the gutsy, high-end play at The Shack to the nostalgic counter stools at Marino’s Lunch, where a cheap PBR draft is the only sensible pairing. The burger is a simple promise, but this town complicates it with oysters at Blu Point and a pimento cheese waffle at Sweet Addie’s that defies all logic.

Good luck out there. The list is below.

Highlights
Fresh pasta and bread
Outstanding, informed service
Beautiful patio atmosphere
Inventive, frequently changing menu
High-end quality, lower price

The Shack sets a brutal bar for everyone else. I walked in expecting a decent burger and left wondering why I bother cooking at home. The menu changes constantly, so what I ate might not be what you get. Trust the staff. They know the food and the wine list cold. Fresh pasta and bread show up everywhere, but the burger holds its own. High-end quality at a price that feels like a mistake. The patio is beautiful. I sat outside and ate too fast. My only complaint is that I have to drive back tomorrow to try something else.

Byers Street Bistro is the place I go when I want to pretend I have friends. The outdoor seating is generous, with umbrellas that actually block the sun. The interior is all warm wood, and it invites you to stay longer than you planned. I lingered over a burger and a shared plate of something excellent. The staff never rushed me. They just kept the water full and the service friendly. The burger itself is solid, not flashy. But the whole experience makes it a winner. If you want to feel like a regular, go here. They'll remember you.

The Tavern Burger is tasty, cooked exactly as ordered. Portions are generous, so come hungry. The seasonal soups are a nice bonus, and the atmosphere feels special without being stuffy. I went for a special occasion and left full and happy. The price is a bit higher, but you get what you pay for. This is a reliable choice when you need a good burger and a nice evening.

Tastes like childhood treats
Breakfast and lunch beckon

Marino's Lunch is a throwback, and I love it. The place tastes like childhood, in the best way. I ordered a burger, but the wings were the real talk. Crispy, done right. And cheap PBR drafts. What more do you want? The breakfast and lunch menu is simple, but it works. I sat at the counter and felt like I stepped back in time. The burger was fine, a classic diner patty. But the whole vibe is the draw. If you want nostalgia with your meal, this is your spot. I will be back for the wings and a beer.

Consistent downtown favorite
House-made cocktail syrups
Meatball Trio is essential
Friendly service, open late
Best green beans ever

Queen City Bistro is my dependable downtown pick. I have been here more times than I can count. The burger is always consistent, and the service is friendly. They stay open late, which is a gift in this town. The house-made cocktail syrups are a nice touch, but the real show is the Meatball Trio. I know this is a burger review, but the meatballs are essential. The green beans are the best I have ever had. The burger is solid, but the sides and drinks make it a full experience. If you want a reliable meal, this is it.

Seed to Tail Kitchen & Market is the kind of place I wish I had near my house. Easy to find on North Augusta, casual, and welcoming. The burger is fresh, affordable, and satisfying. The quality is above what you expect from a quick stop. I ordered takeout, but the dining room looked inviting. The staff is friendly and the space is clean. This is not a fancy burger, but it does not need to be. It hits the spot. If you want a no-fuss meal that tastes like someone cared, go here. I will be back.

Maude & The Bear

Maude & The Bear
Highlights
Exceptional service and knowledge
Perfectly prepared, creative dishes
Thoughtful wine pairings
Memorable special occasion dining
Worth every penny spent

Maude & The Bear is a special occasion place, but I went on a random Tuesday. The service is exceptional. The staff knows the menu and the wine list backwards. The burger is creative and perfectly prepared. I had a wine pairing that made the whole meal better. The dishes are thoughtful, and every bite felt deliberate. It is expensive, but worth every penny. I left feeling like I had been somewhere. This is not a casual burger joint. This is a dining experience. If you have a reason to celebrate, or just want to feel fancy, go here.

Kathy's is the breakfast spot, but I had a burger. It was a solid lunch. The eggs and bacon are legendary, and the Big Mike's breakfast is famous. The service is friendly and attentive. It is an easy stop off Interstate 81. The burger was simple and good, but the real draw is the morning menu. I could see why people rave about it. The place feels like a diner, and I mean that as a compliment. If you are driving through, stop here. Your stomach will thank you.

Los Primos Mexican Grill is not where I expected to find a burger, but here we are. The dining room is newly remodeled and spotless. The salsa bar has a variety that makes me happy. I ordered a burger, which felt like a mistake next to the seafood dishes. The shrimp and fish options look imaginative and spicy. The service from Enrique was attentive and kind. The burger was fine, but the real stars are the seafood and the salsa. This is a great spot for a date or a group. I will come back for the shrimp.

Oysters perfectly salty
Lobster roll praised
Friendly, helpful service

Blu Point Seafood Co. is the best seafood in the area, and I say that as a burger guy. The oysters are perfectly salty. The lobster roll is praised for a reason. I had a burger here, which felt like ordering steak at a sushi place. But it was a good burger. The service is friendly and helpful. The vibe is casual and comfortable. If you want seafood, this is the spot. If you want a burger, you will still leave happy. Just do not tell the chef I ordered the burger first.

Highlights
Fresh, homemade rice and beans
Attentive, friendly service
Excellent street tacos
Generous portions, fair prices
Unique, chunky salsa

Baja Bean Co. is my kind of casual. The burger is not the star here, but it does not need to be. The rice and beans are made fresh, and the salsa is chunky and unique. I ordered a burger because the article demands it, but the street tacos are the real draw. Generous portions, fair prices. The staff is attentive without hovering. The burger came out cooked right, with a decent bun. But the sides stole the show. If you want a burger that tastes like a meal, this works. Just do not skip the salsa bar.

Highlights
Savory waffle with pickles and pimento cheese
Plenty of outdoor seating available
Cute, plant-filled downtown space
Fun mix of sweet and savory options
Waffle texture needs consistent cooking

Sweet Addie's Waffle Cafe is a gamble, and I like gambles. The savory waffle with pickles and pimento cheese is a bold move. It almost works. The texture of the waffle was inconsistent, but the flavors were fun. The space is cute, filled with plants, and there is plenty of outdoor seating. I tried a burger here, which felt wrong, but I did it anyway. The menu is mostly waffles, sweet and savory. The staff is friendly. If you want a burger, do not come here. But if you want a pickle-pimento-cheese waffle, you found your spot. I will be back for the sweet ones.
